Actually, that description makes the movie sound far more bizarre and compelling than it is. Austrian director and co-writer Jessica Hausner has taken an austere approach to her sci-fi horror film, both visually and tonally, which is an intriguing choice in contrast with its wild central idea. But it ultimately results in a cold, unsatisfying experience, and a yearning for Hausner and co-writer Geraldine Bajard to have said something as bold as the film’s color palette. Advertisement The antiseptic aesthetic of a behemoth British biotech lab gets awakened by bursts of color: the dark green of the cafeteria chairs, the light blue of the locker room and, increasingly, the menacing haze of the hot-pink glow from grow lights that hover over rows upon rows of designer plants. The plants themselves—which lead scientist Alice (a chilling Emily Beecham) affectionately names Little Joe after her own human boy ( Kit Connor)—are an explosion of crimson, with soft tendrils that seem to dance as their buds open. It’s as if they’re shyly saying hello—or subtly trying to enslave you. In theory, Alice and her team intend for these to be “mood-lifting, anti-depressant happy plants. ” And maybe there’s some sort of message here about the dangers of seeking shortcuts to wellbeing, rather than actually doing the work. Alice, an emotionally detached single mom, is herself in therapy as we see from a few of her sessions. Working with cinematographer Martin Gschlacht, Hausner slowly and hypnotically moves the camera back and forth during long takes between Alice and her therapist ( Lindsay Duncan). The conversation, however, seems to go nowhere—although maybe that’s also the point. What’s happening right under Alice’s nose (if you’ll pardon the pun), is that the plant she’s developed emits a pollen that initially elicits a sneeze, followed by total devotion. The people inhaling it don’t behave all that differently—but they also don’t seem overwhelmingly happy, either. Rather, they seem weirdly flat, like placid zombies—an indictment, perhaps, of a reliance on pharmaceuticals to even out emotional highs and lows. There’s an eeriness at first to the human interactions that result from exposure to Little Joe—an awkwardness in the inability to connect comfortably. This is especially evident when Alice’s colleague Chris ( Ben Whishaw, playing against nice-guy type) tries to woo her, first with nervous invitations to after-work drinks, then with tentative attempts at kisses. The plant’s effects on another scientist’s emotional support dog—normally a sweet-tempered, playful creature—also create an underlying tension. But then the Japanese-inspired score—heavy on strings and drums, mixed with the surreal sound of dogs barking—provides an even more obvious jolt. It’s another bold stylistic choice, one that’s initially startling but eventually overbearing. A subplot involving the human Joe and his first girlfriend, a confident young lady named Selma ( Jessie Mae Alonzo), suggests the film’s true source of anxiety. Alice’s little boy is growing up and becoming his own person, one she doesn’t recognize anymore with a life and interests outside her own. It’s a sad realization for any mom. Then again, she might just be paranoid, and Hausner seems content to allow us to interpret the film’s meaning in a multitude of ways. “Little Joe” never ventures anywhere near full-on terror mode; it’s more like a dryly British “ Little Shop of Horrors. ” And frustratingly, the film never fulfills the promise of its stylish weirdness. Mit Martin Gschlacht, Barbara Albert und Antonin Svoboda haben Sie vor über zwanzig Jahren die coop99 gegründet, die sich als “ als Plattform einer neuen Filmemacher-Generation in Österreich” versteht. Gibt es da noch immer, auch im Fall von Little Joe, eine Zusammenarbeit bereits während der Entwicklungsphase? ___STEADY_PAYWALL___ Ja. In der coop gab’s immer schon einen Austausch. Wir sind dort zu fünft – am Anfang waren wir zu viert – und treffen uns regelmäßig, um die anstehenden Projekte gemeinsam durchzusprechen. Wenn’s um meine eigenen Projekte geht, präsentiere ich den Kollegen immer verschiedene Versionen eines neuen Projekts, die dann auch besprochen werden. Seit meinem ersten Spielfilm Lovely Rita arbeite ich auch schon mit demselben Weltvertrieb zusammen. Der ist auch immer von Anfang an involviert. Von Mutterschaft, Gentechnik und Body Snatchers Welche Themen waren zentral für die Entwicklung des Drehbuchs von Little Joe? Am Anfang eines Projektes gibt es immer verschiedene Themen, die mich interessieren. Bei Little Joe waren es erstens die Mutter-Kind Geschichte und das Thema, warum man als Mutter ein schlechtes Gewissen „eingeimpft” bekommt, wenn man sich intensiv um seine eigene Arbeit kümmert. Die Hauptfigur durchlebt als Mutter im Laufe der Handlung unterschiedliche Gefühlslagen. Sie ist geplagt von einem schlechten Gewissen. Der andere Komplex dreht sich um die Gentechnik und ihre Ambivalenz, auch um unsere leicht irrationale Angst davor. Wir achten im Supermarkt z. B. auf die Bilder, auf denen „ohne Gentechnik“ steht, obwohl eigentlich kaum einer weiß warum. War von Beginn an klar, dass daraus ein Science-Fiction Film werden würde? Ja, das könnte man noch als die dritte Inspiration nennen. Es gibt im Science-Fiction Genre immer wieder Geschichten über Menschen, die entführt, ausgetauscht oder ersetzt werden – z. The Stepford Wives oder Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Dahinter steckt die Idee, dass jemand, den man kannte, kennt oder dem man nahe steht, auf einmal nicht mehr dieselbe Person ist, sondern quasi durch einen Hochstapler ersetzt worden ist. Das ist eine Übersteigerung einer sehr alltäglichen Erfahrung: nämlich dass man nicht so recht weiß, wer die andere Person eigentlich ist, die man glaubt zu kennen oder zu lieben. Täuscht die andere Person etwas vor, so man es selbst oft tut? © Coproduction Office Dieser Ansatz erklärt auch die ambivalente Haltung, die das Publikum gegenüber den Filmfiguren empfindet – ein Wechsel zwischen Empathie mit und Distanz zu den Charakteren. Der Film überlässt es dem Publikum, seinen Weg in diesem Labyrinth zu finden. Wir wollten alle Figuren gleichberechtigt in ihrer Ehrlichkeit bzw. in ihrer Verlogenheit gestalten, um dem Zuschauer zu verunmöglichen, klar zu sagen „Ah, da ist die Wahrheit, der oder die hat Recht. “ Das ist, wenn man genau hinschaut, nicht möglich in dieser Geschichte. Alice’ Assistent Chris ist z. ein Mann, der in seinen Gefühlen für Alice von Anfang an eine gewisse Unehrlichkeit besitzt – und das schon, bevor ihn die Pflanze befällt. Es ist also schwer zu sagen, ob er sich durch die Pflanze verändert hat oder ob er sowieso so ist. “Gerade Wissenschaftlerinnen sehe ich immer noch selten” Alice bewegt sich ja als Wissenschaftlerin in einer männlich dominierten Sphäre. Ja, in Science-Fiction Filmen sieht man oft Wissenschaftler im Zentrum der Erzählung. Ich fand es natürlich spannend, eine Wissenschaftlerin ins Zentrum zu stellen, weil es das nicht oft gibt. Seit einigen Jahren – vielleicht auch nur seit #MeToo – merke ich, dass viele amerikanische Filme auch weibliche Hauptfiguren haben, was ich sehr begrüße, aber gerade Wissenschaftlerinnen sehe ich immer noch selten. Welche Beobachtungen haben Sie darüber hinaus gemacht, was Frauenfiguren auf der Leinwand betrifft? Mir fällt insgesamt auf, dass viele amerikanische Mainstreamprodukte gesellschaftspolitisch sehr modern geworden sind, zum Beispiel Kinderfilme. Das ist ja ein ganz wichtiger Punkt: Mit welchen Filmen wachsen unsere Kinder auf? Ich habe letztens mit meinem Sohn The Addams Family und Elsa angeschaut. Dabei ist mir wieder aufgefallen: Mädchen sind jetzt auch Heldinnen. Mädchen können Geschichten lösen, Mädchen können Abenteuer bestehen. Das ist toll und wichtig für unsere Kinder. “Es geht darum, den Zuschauern eine Welt jenseits der Perfektion zu suggerieren. ” Sie haben einmal erzählt, dass die Filmemacherin Maya Deren Sie auch inspiriert hat. Für Little Joe haben Sie mit Kompositionen von Teiji Ito gearbeitet, dessen Musik auch für deren Experimentalfilme, z. für Meshes of the Afternoon von 1943, verwendet wurde. Maya Deren ist eine Regisseurin, die mich schon seit langem sehr interessiert, v. a. ihre Filmsprache und ihre Art zu schneiden und surreale Settings herzustellen. Ihre Experimentalfilme haben so eine Traumqualität, die sie allein durch Kameraposition, Schnitt und Musik herstellt – also ohne Special Effects. Dieses Handwerk, das Maya Deren beherrscht, finde ich sehr inspirierend. Da habe ich mir auch für meine Filme immer wieder ein Scheibchen abgeschnitten. Und die Kompositionen gibt es schon lange, ich glaube sie sind aus den 80er Jahren. Teiji Ito ist auch schon lange tot. Ich habe die Musik gewählt, weil sie teilweise eine gewisse Science-Fiction Suspense Stimmung erzeugt und an anderen Stellen wieder total seltsam, irritierend ist. Ähnlich wie die Kamera, tut sie manchmal so, als würde sie die Erzählung unterstützen, nur um sich im nächsten Moment aber wieder selbstständig zu machen. Die Elemente sind zusammen schon harmonisch, aber an manchen Stellen übertreiben sie. Sie verunsichern und fordern das Publikum heraus, sich sein eigenes Bild zu machen, statt es am Ende in einen sicheren Hafen zu führen. Das visuelle Konzept des Films ist sehr interessant. Mir sind z. ein paar Einstellungen aufgefallen, in denen die Gesprächspartner:innen jeweils am Bildrand sitzen, z. Bella und Alice, und die Kamera fährt langsam auf die Mitte zu, bis am Ende der Einstellung keine Person mehr sichtbar ist. Grundsätzlich hat die Kamera im Film eine Art Eigenleben, das nicht unbedingt der Handlung oder den Schauspielern folgt. Es gibt diese Kamerafahrten, die Sie jetzt erwähnt haben, oder Szenen, in denen sich die Schauspieler ins Off spielen und dann wieder ins On kommen und die Kamera folgt ihnen dabei nicht. Ich erarbeite das Konzept immer mit meinem Kameramann Martin Gschlacht. Er hat unlängst zu mir gesagt, dass er sich an meinem Set immer erst umstellen und daran gewöhnen muss, dass seine Kamera bei mir diese störrische Eigenwilligkeit hat, als wäre sie ein eigener Charakter. Das kommt in meinen anderen Filmen teilweise auch vor. Es geht dabei darum, den Zuschauern eine Welt jenseits der Perfektion zu suggerieren. Es ist eine lückenhafte Welt, in der auch die Filmemacher nicht genau wissen, was passieren wird oder was wann wichtig ist. Üblicherweise nähert man sich den Protagonisten am Höhepunkt des Dialogs. Bei uns ist es aber anders: Am Höhepunkt des Dialogs verlieren wir die Protagonisten aus dem Bild und schwenken auf den Vorhang. Das ist natürlich auch ein Witz. Das heißt: Was weiß ich schon, was hier wichtig und wahr ist!? Über Letzte Artikel Bianca J. The nearest this film gets to Japan is the damned sushi takeaway the lead character and her son eat so where are the enraged triggered 's to shout "Cultural Appropriation" at this misuse of Kabuki music in this Japaneseless arty farty bore fest?
There is nothing engaging in any of the characters, indeed their banality before and after infection remains exactly the same resulting in one of the most boring and senseless wastes of time.
Technically I have to check the spoiler box because so little happens in this drudge of a film that even mentioning the Kabuki music is a spoiler.
Oh and if you do choose to watch this and write a review please please explain to me why a bunch of flowers are barking and making all the noise of a kennels at feeding time because I am just bemused by the choice of sound effects used in this crap.
Message to the film makers: The place to put sudden drum beats is during a reveal in the film or a sudden change of pace in the action, you don't put in random sound effects during moments of inaction because that just makes you look like an idiotic wannabe failure.

I drive from Austin to Fort Worth today and I didn't see it but there's a lot of construction. I hope Little Joe's museum is still there.
